Conversation Café Language Courses

*All times listed are in Mountain Time. Please check course announcements for temporary changes such as semester breaks, modified holiday hours, etc. Conversation Cafés are CLOSED on weekends and on major US holidays.

ASL Conversation Café

This language café uses ConexED to complete all of the following on the same platform:

  • Schedule an appointment to reserve your time slot to meet with your tutor at a time that is convenient for you.
  • Message your tutor directly to ask a quick question in a chat box.
  • Email your tutor through the app.
  • Click the ‘Knock on Door’ button to see if your tutor can fit you in between their previously scheduled appointments.

*When scheduling an appointment or completing a drop-in appointment, please meet with a different tutor for practice appointments than you do for your graded appointment whenever possible. Our staff reserves the right to reschedule your graded appointment if you make it with the same tutor that you practiced with whenever schedules allow for the change.

Conversation Café Policies

  • Students will need a working microphone, headphones, and webcam to work in the cafe. If you are experiencing tech problems, you may enter the café and ask to be sent to tech support.
  • Students can complete ONE speaking appointment per day.
  • You must complete all speaking appointments in the correct order.
  • You will need to complete ALL previous assignments before your speaking appointment.
  • Graded speaking appointments are completed on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • A grade will be posted within 24 hours of the appointment.
  • Students will need a form of photo ID if they are taking an exam.

Tips for Successful Conversation Café appointments

Learning a language takes consistent practice. Before your speaking appointments, come to the conversation café to maximize learning, improve pronunciation and earn higher scores. The following guidelines will help you prepare for you speaking appointment:

  1. Read through the speaking appointment prompt.
  2. Be familiar with the grading rubric.
  3. Prepare for the speaking appointment on your own.
  4. When ready, log in to Adobe Connect or ConexED (depending on the language café). If you are logging in to Adobe Connect, make sure to log in with your full name and course name.
  5. Practice the speaking appointment with a TA as many times as needed.
  6. Make necessary changes based on TA feedback.
  7. Return to the Conversation Café to complete the speaking appointment.
